These flint striker multi-tools are laser cut from high carbon steel in a simple rectangular shape that is comfortable and easy to hold. Flint & steel and friction bow drills are foundational skills in the art of primitive survival and bushcraft. Both are based on ancient designs and are the oldest methods for fire-starting. When struck with a piece of flint, small particles of the steel are scraped off that quickly oxidize in the air, turning into sparks through a process know as pyrophoricity. These small sparks can be "caught" with a piece of charred cloth that will grow an ember that can then be used to ignite larger tinder to build a fire. It is a process that takes patience and practice to master, but is an excellent skill to learn as an alternative to modern fire lighting techniques. These strikers also feature a depression in the center face of the tool for a bow drill spindle. The hard steel provides a low friction bearing point, concentrating the friction on the fireboard and allowing for smooth strokes on your way to creating an ember.
Please note that the Flint & steel technique also requires a piece of natural flint and charcloth which are NOT included. Also does not include the other components of a bowdrill kit. These items are available separately or as part of our basic and deluxe kits.
We stand by all of our products with a no-hassle promise; if you're not satisfied for any reason we'll make it right.
